Several years ago, I had a dream. In the dream I was carrying boxes. Now, this comes as no surprise, since I was in the process of moving at the time. But in the dream, I was VERY clear that I had enough boxes to carry; however, I bent over to pick up just one more box. When I did this in the dream, I threw my back out and was in a lot of pain. As I was waking up I heard in my heart, “Beware of the little foxes that spoil the vine.” Song of Solomon 2:15
The interpretation of that dream was as clear to me as day. It wasn’t the moving that caused the pain. It was not picking up the boxes that caused the pain. It was the mentality I have had most of my life. The problem was what I now call the “Just One More” trick. It was pushing myself to go beyond what there was grace to do.
For example, how many times do we know it is time to go home after work, but say to ourselves, “Just one more e-mail…?” How many times do we know that we need to stop eating, but say to ourselves, “Just one more cookie?” How many times do we get involved in conversations that are life producing at first, but then we don’t stop talking when we know we are supposed to and two hours later wonder why in the world am I so exhausted?
It isn’t the work that causes us to become addicted to our job; it isn’t just the food that caused us to become obese; and it isn’t the interactions that cause us to become dried up so that we aren’t any good to anyone. What causes those things is extending ourselves beyond God’s grace. When we wait on Him, we can trust Him to provide a game plan for the specific situation in which we find ourselves. BUT… we have to be willing to yield to His strategy and not allow ourselves to go beyond His grace. (I wrote a post recently called, “How to Bring God’s Blessings Into Your Life.” If you haven’t read it, take a moment and check it out. It will add some more depth to this post.)
Keep in mind that satan’s job is to steal, kill, and destroy us. Many times, it is not the blatant sin that causes our downfall. It is what starts out as a little step off the path. It is the “one more” idea he plants. If we keep yielding to those slight deviations, before we know it, we end up a mile off the path in the WRONG direction.
So, today it is my prayer that as you take time to BeLoved, you would allow the Holy Spirit to come and show you any way that you have allowed the little foxes to come and spoil the vine, any way that you have allowed the “just one more” trick to steal your joy, your peace, your health, or your vitality. Be quick to repent and then ask the Father to help you become obedient to the plan He has for you. No more and no less! It is the only way into the abundant life that Jesus died to give us.
