“I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.”
Have you ever stopped to consider that the Creator of the universe talks to us? If not, take some time to think about it.
As a matter of fact, I even believe He talks to us all the time. There are many ways that communication flows from His heart. A few days ago I shared a post on several different avenues God uses to talk to us. If you didn’t get a chance to read it, take a minute and check it out now. How to Hear from God
So, today, let’s look at how He communicates through the realm of dreams.
Examples of Ways God Uses Dreams:
There are so many references to dreams n the Bible. God uses them to speak, reveal and direct His followers. Consider the life of Joseph. In Genesis, we see that He revealed His plan for Joseph’s life through a dream. In the New Testament, He spoke to Mary’s husband, Joseph, through a dream. He told them that their lives were in danger and they needed to leave. He even directed the early apostles through dreams.
Honestly, dreaming is one of my favorite ways that God communicates His heart with me. I love that dreaming takes place at night when you are sound asleep. God can speak directly to your heart and bypass your mind. I also love that the symbolism He uses is extremely personal, based on your specific frame of reference. But, the main thing I love about dreaming is that the interpretation of dreams requires an intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father. You really have to be plugged into His heart to understand what He is saying to you.
Is it a Pizza Dream?
Now, I want you to understand this. I do not believe that all of the dreams you have are from God’s heart. I believe you can have dreams that are a purging of your conscience. They can be like a broom – sweeping the dust and remnants of the day from your heart and your mind. I also believe that the things you eat can have an effect on what you dream. Did you eat a huge meal? Did you have something spicy? What about pizza? All of these things can make your body react strangely when you go to sleep. Your own strong desires can even make you dream certain things. So, the question is, HOW do you know when a dream comes from the Holy Spirit?
The rule of thumb that I use is this: Can I detect some “juice” on it? Does it have the Life of God in it? Does it identify an area of my heart where God is currently dealing? If so, then, I proceed by recording it in my dream journal. After I have it written down, I pray over it and ask God to open my heart and the ears of my spirit to hear His voice clearly. There are many times that He will prompt me to share it with a friend who helps me interpret it. A lot of times there are scriptures that come up and match the interpretation.
Several times I have had words of correction come to me in the form of a dream. Even though there is an area of my heart that God is dealing with, I always have tremendous hope, joy and peace after the interpretation comes.
So, today it is my prayer that you take the time to BeLoved and as you sit in His presence, ask Him if He has given you any dreams. Talk to Him about ones you think He may have given you and ask Him to help you understand the interpretation. If you don’t have a place to write the dreams out in long hand, I encourage you to pick up this dream journal freebie here. This helps you become a good steward over words He entrusts to you.
