“You crazy Galatians! Did someone put a hex on you? Have you taken leave of your senses? Something crazy has happened, for it’s obvious that you no longer have the crucified Jesus in clear focus in your lives. His sacrifice on the cross was certainly set before you clearly enough. Let me put this question to you: How did your new life begin? Was it by working your heads off to please God? Or was it by responding to God’s Message to you? Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren’t smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? Did you go through this whole painful learning process for nothing? It is not yet a total loss, but it certainly will be if you keep this up! Answer this question: Does the God who lavishly provides you with his own presence, his Holy Spirit, working things in your lives you could never do for yourselves, does he do these things because of your strenuous moral striving or because you trust him to do them in you? Don’t these things happen among you just as they happened with Abraham? He believed God, and that act of belief was turned into a life that was right with God.”
I love these verses. Sometimes it seems so easy to get into a “works” mentality. It is especially easy to get into this mindset at the beginning of the new year. We make resolutions and then we think we have to follow them in our own strength. We think we have to work our tails off at the gym to get rid of that extra weight. And we go….faithfully….for a few weeks before we realize, DANG! This is just too hard and then we stop going to the gym altogether; instead of realizing that Jesus wants to be involved in our lives.
I want to encourage you to remember that God is working diligently behind the scenes on your behalf. He wants you to have practical experiences in success, but more than that, He wants you to know Him. He wants to have an intimate relationship with you. He wants you to communicate with Him; to share the innermost thoughts and desires of your heart with Him, and He wants to work with you to bring them to pass. What a concept. We can be co-laborers with the Creator of the Universe.
So, I pray that today you will take the time to BeLoved Completely and as you sit in the presence of your heavenly Father, let go of anything you are trying to accomplish in your own strength and talk to Him about it; REALLY talk to Him. As you do this, you will find an overwhelming peace begin to take over your heart. And I promise you, where you used to feel pressure to get things done, you will feel a trust in the ONLY ONE Who can do them…JESUS!!
p.s. To help document your new start, I have included a journal page to print and use as you reflect on these desires. What are some of the desires of your heart for 2016? Please leave them in a comment and I will gladly pray for you.
